Castration and sterilization cat, pros and cons
When it comes to sterilization or castration, they are all in the front row to say that the barbaric procedures to subject their cat. Surely, those who think in this way, despite being in good faith, do not consider the fact that cats go into heat at least twice a year and that they can give birth from 2 to 8 kittens. Result: catteries full of abandoned puppies to adopt, an increase in stray dogs in many Italian areas, without considering that some people, especially in rural areas, don’t think twice about killing newborn puppies. Furthermore, neutered and sterilized cats are less likely to contract life-threatening diseases, such as breast cancer and uterine cancer. There are differences between castration and sterilization: this explains the pros and cons of both procedures.
Castration: how it works
Castration is a term used when dealing with male cats. The male cat is subjected to orchiectomy, ie the removal of the testicles, using local anesthesia, in order to remain conscious but dissociated if stimulated. Castration is used when the testicles of the cat have descended completely, which occurs between six and ten months of life. The intervention serves to deprive the cat of hormones that regulate sexual behavior, so as to end the desire and instinct to mate. Normally a few stitches are applied, which fall on their own. It is good to plan the intervention before the feline sprays or marks the territory with urine, otherwise, the behavior will keep it even after the operation. For the male cat, the dissolving of sperm is not immediate: it is able to quietly fertilize a female up to a month before becoming sterile.
Sterilization: how it works
The sterilization of the female cat is called in medical jargon ovariectomy, ie the removal of the ovaries by an incision in the abdomen, or ovary-hysterectomy, or the removal of both the uterus and the ovaries. It is a more invasive operation compared to castration of the male and is done under general anesthesia, with one of the two technique more common: the hair is shaved and a ventral incision is made, which requires a check-up to eliminate the stitches (even if it is the cheapest), or a lateral incision on one side. It is performed for shorter convalescence times and for organic fading stitches. It means that you don’t need a visit to remove them. It is the most expensive one. Sterilization is recommended before the first ointment, then over 4 months, but is also practiced on older cats. It may happen that an ovary or ovarian tissue is not removed because it is too adherent and camouflaged: for this reason, the cat can get into heat and a second operation must be performed, as it can lead to the onset of tumors.
Castration and sterilization: pros and cons
Castration and sterilization have pros and cons : cats will be calmer and there will be no episodes of oestrus (so no gatherings of cats at all hours or cats stuck in chimneys to reach the cat) and pregnancies, no fights for the territory, since the castrated and sterilized cats are on the last step of the feline hierarchical scale. Furthermore, female cats are subject to pyometra, a thickening of the uterus that turns into chronic inflammation. Both procedures do not require special care, just give a look if the cat licks its wound too often. Obviously, if there is blood loss, swelling and redness you must call the vet immediately. The cons of the interventions mentioned above are obviously that the cats will become sterile. L ‘ obesity is not a side effect, only that the male cat and a female cat will tend to be more close to home rather than fight and make elopement, quid i is well moderate the amount of dry food to the alternating wet. It can happen that the male cat has episodes of cystitis and blood in the urine: they can be calculations, but also stressful change right away. It is treated with an antibiotic prescribed by the veterinarian, but it is advisable to give it specific food for the urinary tract once a month, in order to keep the urine channel clean and try to avoid sources of stress ( pheromones are a very useful solution).
Cat castration and sterilization: price
The cost of sterilization and the castration of the cat can vary greatly, depending on whether you run from a freelancer or not. Moreover, in the catteries or shelters for abandoned animals, the service is offered by giving a free donation. In any case, sterilization is an expensive operation for the preparation of the operating room and for post-intervention assistance. It is obvious that the greatest guarantees are with a professional veterinarian. The price of the operations varies from veterinary to veterinary and from Municipality to Municipality.
